What is the fear of germs?
The fear of germs is yet another relatively common fear. This fear usually manifests itself as a form of extreme anxiety. Those that suffer from it will go to great lengths to avoid situations that will put them at risk of countering germs, to the detriment of their social or personal life. The fear can be a fear of bodily fluids, dirty or moldy surfaces or even surfaces that they are not sure have been cleaned. Those that suffer from a fear of germs commonly suffer from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). The cause of the fear can come from trauma or genetics. The fear will often manifest itself in obsessive movements, such as excessive hand washing, showering or avoidance of public places or areas altogether. Forms of treatment for a fear of germs include CBT, exposure therapy and stress reducing activities such as yoga or meditation as well as self help through VR.
